B2B3D wasn’t started with big VC dreams or a Silicon Valley launch party.
It was started it because someone needed a part — and couldn’t find a vendor willing to make just one.
Rick, our founder, retired from a 20-year career as a military engineer and then followed it with another career leading tech systems in the startup world.
So, he wasn’t looking for another high-pressure job. He was just building things in his garage — working with CNCs, sketching designs, fixing stuff that was broken.
But once he got into 3D printing, it was a game-changer: more precise, less wasteful, easier to tweak and improve.
A friend of a friend needed a custom plastic part for their business. Rick designed it, printed it, and delivered it for less than retail — and it worked better, too.
That’s when B2B3D was born.

“Good enough is perfect” because perfect is the enemy of good. Once the part or assembly meets the needs then that’s the time to stop messing with it. On the sign rider clips, strength, durability and functionality are critical, but a small surface artifact won’t impact the functionality. However, if it did matter that would cause the price to go up to account for a natural amount of scrapping of otherwise good parts. Conversely, multi-color plaques need to have a perfect surface over strength and durability so the scrap rate is higher, printing speeds are slower which drives time and cost.
Our value is being able to dial in the three key variables of speed, quality and cost. I’d rather lose a sale than fall short of your needs. Corporate America has lost sight of anything over 90 days.
